About Dexter
The Village of Dexter and its Township were named after Hon. Samuel W. Dexter, who purchased a substantial tract of land in the area, founding the village in 1824. Initially known as "Mill Creek Settlement," it officially became Dexter in 1830. Judge Dexter, appointed County Court Justice in 1826, played a pivotal role in the village's development, establishing a post office and holding court. The first sawmill and grist mill were built in 1827 and 1844, respectively. Dexter attracted its first merchant in 1830 and saw the arrival of the first blacksmith, Alexander Crane, in the same year. Gordon Hall, Judge Dexter's home, was constructed in 1841. Dexter's early history involved peaceful interactions with Native Americans and the establishment of the Dexter Riflemen in 1832. The arrival of the railroad in 1841 marked a significant event, and the village continued to grow, welcoming a woolen mill in 1838 and witnessing advancements such as the first newspaper in 1869, telephone in the 1880s, and electric lights in 1897. Today, Dexter stands as a thriving community, blending modernity with its enduring charm and hospitality.
